In a unique and heartfelt attempt to help her beloved pet cat Keith lose weight, Sara Matthews, a 47-year-old pet owner from Bristol, UK, has gone to extraordinary lengths. Ms. Matthews has installed childproof locks on her fridge and cupboards to ensure Keith, who weighs a hefty 10kg, doesn’t steal any food.
Sara adopted Keith as a birthday gift for her daughter when she turned 10. Little did she know that keeping Keith from snacking would become a significant challenge. She shared her story with Mirror UK, revealing that she spent £2,500 last year to install these locks to protect Keith from his own insatiable appetite.
“At first, he would clamber in when you opened the fridge, and I was just so worried he would get trapped without us noticing,” Sara explained. “As it’s gone on, we’ve had to put more and more locks on every cupboard with food in. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a circular knob handle or a pulley; he will find a way in.”
Keith’s weight issues began when he was first brought home. To prevent others from overfeeding him, Sara decided to keep Keith indoors. Over the years, she has spent more than £2,000 on his care, including medication for eye and ear problems.
“At one point, we had food specially made for him as he had a urinary problem. The usual food he had was high in calories, so I couldn’t risk him eating it,” she added.
Last year, Sara also paid £2,500 for blood tests to check for Cushing’s disease and diabetes, but thankfully, the results were negative. However, due to Keith’s size, there was concern that he might not wake up from any anesthesia if required.
Additionally, Keith’s antibiotic treatments caused further stomach issues, leading to the need for food with an appetite stimulant, which unfortunately exacerbates his weight problems.
